Our Mission
The AI4FOOD project aims to develop a comprehensive and interoperable Slovenian Food Composition Database (FCDB) enhanced with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and supported by a knowledge base.
Food composition data is essential for understanding the nutritional value of foods, supporting public health policies, enabling precision nutrition, and advancing food science research. However, existing databases often suffer from missing values, limited coverage, inconsistent metadata, and poor interoperability across domains.
AI4FOOD addresses these challenges by combining analytical chemistry, food science, and artificial intelligence, developing advanced AI methods to collect, integrate, and validate food composition data from diverse sources.
The project will:
Expand the Slovenian Food Composition Database.
Integrate data from international food databases and scientific literature
Develop semantic resources and knowledge graphs for food data.
Create a food foundation model based on large language models (LLMs)
The resulting database and knowledge base will support advanced applications such as food-related question answering systems, nutritional analysis tools, and decision support for researchers, policymakers, and the food industry.
The project is funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS) and implemented by researchers from the Jožef Stefan Institute and partner institutions.
